Business Carbon Calculator

Business Carbon Calculator

A business carbon footprint calculator is a tool that helps businesses estimate the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that their operations emit. By understanding their carbon footprint, businesses can identify areas for improvement, track their progress over time, and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability to stakeholders. Use the tabs along the top to select each element within your business. (The right hand panel provides guidance notes for each section)

The tool can be used to calculate carbon emissions for fuel consumption and refrigeration / air-conditioning top ups.

This calculator uses the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting 2021v2 to determine the final carbon emission.

The tool can be used to calculate carbon emissions for electricity use

This calculator uses the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting 2021v2 to determine the final carbon emission.

The tool can be used to calculate carbon emissions for most types of vehicles.

This calculator uses the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting 2021v2 to determine the final carbon emission.

Where possible users should report on litres of fuel and/or kWh of electricity used for freight rather than on a km or miles basis as this is a more accurate calculation

To avoid double-counting of emissions, do not include activity/emissions resulting from the use of plug-in electric vehicles that are charged predominantly on your organisation's premises if you are also already reporting the emissions resulting from your electricity consumed there.

This calculator allows you to estimate the carbon dioxide emissions for passenger flights. To select the departure and destination airports start typing the airport city into the text box. Interconnecting flights can be added by clicking + button on the right hand side. Select the best match for Cabin Class as the options provided by this calculator are based the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors.

For a more detailed explanation of this calculation please click on the FAQ.

This calculator uses Passenger km factors which are used when single passengers are travelling by means of mass transport (such as by train) and the aim is to calculate emissions on a single-person basis, not account for the whole vehicle.

The tool can be used to calculate carbon emissions for hotel stays in any of the specified countries.

This calculator uses the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting 2021v2 to determine the final carbon emission. The conversion factors provided are for an average class of hotel and can be applied to a stay at any type of hotel. The conversion factors provided are an average for the specified country. The conversion factors are provided on a ‘room per night’ basis and should be applied to each room that is occupied during the stay.  A “room per night” is on a per room basis and does not differentiate for number of travellers staying in the room.

For each hotel stay, the number of hotel rooms is multiplied by the length of stay (in number of nights) and by the conversion factor for the appropriate country to give the associated emissions. A room night is for the room and does not differentiate for number of travellers staying in the room.

Carbon Footprint Facts about your Bus or Coach Journey

CO2 per passenger KM
1 g

Emission Comparison: The average bus in the UK emits about 75g of CO2 per passenger-kilometre, compared to 158g for cars. This means that bus travel can cut per-passenger CO2 emissions by more than half compared to car travel.

Electric Buses
1

Electric Buses: Electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, and can therefore significantly reduce CO2 emissions from public transport, especially as the electricity grid becomes less carbon-intensive. As of 2020, there were about 500 electric buses in service in the UK.

reduction in co2
1 %

Lifecycle Emissions: Over its lifecycle, a diesel bus emits around 1,700 tonnes of CO2, while an electric bus emits around 1,100 tonnes, including manufacturing and fuel production emissions. This represents a reduction of about 35%.
