Vehicle Carbon Calculator
This vehicle carbon footprint calculator is a tool that helps estimate the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced by an individual's car travel. It aims to increase awareness of the environmental impact of personal vehicle use and promote more sustainable forms of transportation.
Note: The tool can be used to calculate carbon emissions for most types of vehicles. This calculator uses the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting 2021 to determine the final carbon emission.
Where possible users should report on litres of fuel and/or kWh of electricity used for freight rather than on a km basis as this is a more accurate calculation
To avoid double-counting of emissions, do not include activity/emissions resulting from the use of plug-in electric vehicles that are charged predominantly on your organisation’s premises if you are also already reporting the emissions resulting from your electricity consumed there.
Carbon Footprint Facts about your Car Journey
Transport's Contribution to Emissions: As of 2019, transport was the largest contributor to the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 27% of total emissions. Within this, cars were responsible for 55% of transport emissions.
Fuel Switch: Switching from a car that gets 20 miles per gallon to one that gets 40 miles per gallon can reduce a driver's annual carbon footprint by about 2.4 metric tons of CO2, assuming the driver travels about 11,500 miles per year.
Average Car Emissions: As of 2020, the average new car in the UK produced 112.8 grams of CO2 per kilometre, a decrease of 11.8% compared to 2019 and the lowest level on record.
